Traffic Signals
Solid Red Light
Come to a complete stop at the stop line and wait for green — right turns permitted after stopping unless signed otherwise.
What This Sign Means
Red means stop completely behind the stop line or crosswalk. In Alberta, after a full stop you may turn right on red (and left onto a one-way from a one-way) unless a sign prohibits it.
What You Should Do
Stop fully. If turning right on red, stop first, yield to pedestrians and cross traffic, then turn only when completely safe.
Knowledge Test Tip
Running a red light costs 3 demerit points in Alberta. The full-stop-before-right-on-red rule is tested constantly.
