Pedestrian Walk Signal

The white walking figure tells pedestrians they may cross; the flashing orange hand means don't start crossing.

What This Sign Means

Walk signals coordinate pedestrians with traffic lights. A flashing hand with a countdown means pedestrians already crossing may finish, but no one new should start.

What You Should Do

As a driver, yield to all pedestrians in the crosswalk regardless of what their signal shows. When turning, shoulder-check for pedestrians who started crossing legally.

Knowledge Test Tip

Failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk costs 4 demerit points in Alberta — among the highest single-offence penalties on the test.
