Regulatory Signs
Maximum Speed Limit Sign
A white rectangular sign showing the maximum legal speed in km/h under ideal conditions.
What This Sign Means
Speed limit signs show the maximum speed permitted by law in good conditions. In poor weather or low visibility, the safe speed may be much lower than the posted limit.
What You Should Do
Never exceed the posted speed. Adjust below the limit when roads are icy, wet, or visibility is reduced. Where no sign is posted, the default is 50 km/h in urban areas and 80 km/h on rural roads.
Knowledge Test Tip
Memorize Alberta's unposted defaults: 50 km/h in cities and towns, 80 km/h outside urban areas — a guaranteed question topic.
