How to Read Alberta Road Signs

Shape Tells You the Type

Octagon = stop. Triangle = yield. Diamond = warning. Rectangle = regulatory or information. Pentagon = school zone.

Colour Tells You the Message

Red = stop/prohibition. Yellow = warning. Green = direction/guide. Blue = services. Orange = construction. Fluorescent yellow-green = school/pedestrian.

Signs You Must Obey vs. Advisory Signs

Regulatory signs (speed limits, stop, yield) are legally enforceable. Warning signs advise caution but are not enforceable. Advisory speed tabs on warning signs are recommended, not mandatory.

Traffic Signals You Must Know

Solid Green

Proceed if the intersection is clear. Yield to pedestrians and vehicles already in the intersection.

Solid Yellow

Stop safely if you can. If you're too close to stop safely, proceed with caution through the intersection.

Solid Red

Come to a complete stop. You may turn right on red after stopping, unless a sign prohibits it.

Flashing Green (Alberta)

Pedestrian-controlled intersection. The light will change when a pedestrian pushes the button. Not the same as a green arrow.

Green Arrow

Protected turn in the arrow's direction. Oncoming traffic has a red light. Proceed without yielding.

Flashing Red

Treat as a stop sign. Come to a complete stop, then proceed when safe.
